In accordance with the policies adopted by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the contact information a domain name is registered with must be correct and accurate at all times. Besides, this information is openly available on WHOIS websites and while this may not be a problem for firms, it may not be very convenient for individuals, since anyone can view their names and their personal postal and email addresses, particularly in times when identity theft is not that unusual. Because of this, registrars have launched a service that hides the details of their clients without altering them. The service is referred to as Whois Privacy Protection. In case it is enabled, people will see the details of the registrar, not the domain owner’s, if they do a WHOIS search. The Whois Privacy Protection service is supported by all generic domain name extensions, but it’s still not possible to hide your personal details with some country-code extensions.
